I’m at SACS, attending a presentation on the evolution of galaxies, and how quasars can be used to trace their formation. I’ll have more pictures later.
It’s short notice, but the SACS meeting is this weekend – March 19-20, at USC-Aiken. The program is here.
I’m especially looking forward to finding out how to make a soda-bottle speaker.
There will be a meeting of the NC Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers, in cooperation with Zone 5 (NC and SC) of the Society of Physics Students on April 16 (Friday evening) and April 17 (Saturday). Further information is available here.
Even if you can’t make both days, it’s definitely worth it to attend. I’ve been attending Physics section meetings for over 10 years; when I started, I was a General Science teacher – basically, about the same level as a middle school science teacher. Over time, through my participation in the section meetings, I learned so many things I was able to take back to my classroom. I also learned of opportunities to further my physics background, at very little cost in money – only some time.
Eventually, I was able to upgrade my certification to Physics and Chemistry – it wouldn’t have been possible without my attendance at those meetings.
These days, even science jobs aren’t easy to get. Any professional activities that will make you a more desirable candidate are a big plus.
Several of us who are Physics teachers in the border area of NC/SC have decided to start a group to provide support for local science teachers.
We plan to introduce the new technologies, including Texas Instruments NSpire graphing calculator, as well as hit topics that local teachers want to explore.
